The M&B #2 was one of 34 vessels lost in 1909 along with 24 steamers, five schooners, and four tugs. The failure to find her broken hulk in spite of thousands of searches in the relatively small, notoriously shallow Lake Erie, and the continuous retelling of her story, have caused her to be known by many as “the holy grail” of Great Lakes shipwrecks. In 2012, this wreck was discovered.

Great shorter story of Rail Car Ships which were important in the development of much of North America. The history of these ships has been ignored until now as far as I Know. Added to my appeal was the author's ability as a marine detective; he gave suggestions as to why these vessels sank. Should you receive this book from Kindle, check out the last pages first as there is a photo of the ships. Some people say that they are more like a ferry.Product details

Beneath Lake Erie eBook E A Perrine Reviews
I thought this book was very interesting and informative. I grew up around the great lakes and was totally unaware of rail cars on ferries. lol I was very drawn into the facts and information given.
This book is very interesting and informative. It is hard to put down once you start reading.
Nice read
Difficult to read - it is presented with very little background or organized flow. You must have intimate knowledge of the Great Lakes- there are many references to towns and landmarks without an accompanying map. I have read dozens of books on Great Lakes shipping, I would not recommend this one.
Ok, wouldn't buy it again.
Excellent story about the Marquette and Bessemer carferry. Lake Erie may be the shallowest of the Great Lakes but ships have vanished there also. I am very interested in Great Lakes shipwreck history and this book is a fine addition to my collection. Very good reading for the Great Lakes history buff.
Perrine has told a great story here in a highly literate style. Because of his father's and his own personal experience as chief engineers on great lakes railroad car ferries he is able describe technical
details exceptionally well and accurately. He's passionate about great lakes seafaring and the subject of this book--the sinking of three railroad car ferries. Particular emphasis is given to the 1909 sinking of the Marquette and Bessemer No2 in a December gale and modern day wreck discovery. It was one of 54 ships lost that year Perrine points out giving an idea of the dangers involved.
